Next New Media

Nowadays, there is an incredible obsession over likes and upvotes within social media. With so many people creating so much content, why aren't people getting paid for it? This new type of new media would attempt to solve this question by introducing a new type of social media platform that rewards users for their contributions. By sharing your posts, you can obtain upvotes from members of the community and users surfing the social media platform. Depending on the amount of upvotes you get, you may be eligible for a portion of a rewards pool. Another way of getting a reward is upvoting a post before it gets popular. Overall, this platform is a great way of getting money through upvotes and posts, but it is limited by the lack of a customer base. A possible way of getting this platform to stardom is partnering up with a similar established platform like Reddit. This is great in the sense that it could have huge implications with a monetized creative content competition, especially for marketers. The best part is being innovation and constant product development. There is a huge potential for marketers to engage their audience in new and exciting ways.

Wiki So Far

For our class wiki, I have contributed to three sections: New Media in Investing, New Media in Gaming, and New Media in Sports. Within the Investing subwiki, I took out what was already there because I knew there was a lot of misinformation. Coming from a finance background, I was familiar with the section I edited and was able to contribute to the subwiki by explaining in simple terms for investment banking is and what it entails. I broke the field into several segments in which people see investment banking and how the whole process works as a whole. Within the Gaming section, I added another category within the First Person Shooter section. This category was Counter Strike: Global Offensive, one of the most popular first person shooter games out there today. I am familiar with the game because I play it myself, so I was able to describe what the objective of the game is and why people find it so popular. To give people a better picture of what the game is, I included an image of Counter Strike: Global Offensive so people can see what gameplay is like. Lastly, I contributed to the Sports section by explaining how new media is used within sports. Since my term paper was very similar to what I wanted to talk about within this section, I was able to incorporate some of the research I conducted for my term paper into this part, which involves explaining the concept of digital streaming and why media companies are so eager to use this strategy nowadays.

P2P

File sharing is the practice of sharing or offering access to digital information or resources , which may include documents, multimedia, graphics, computer programs images, or e-books. Through file sharing, one can access or transmit data from one computer to another. A major reason for why people do this is to give others access to a file in order to allow them to work on it, regardless of their location. This way, people may work on a file from a remote location rather than being there in person next to the file creator. P2P file sharing stands for peer to peer file sharing, and allows individuals to access media files using a software program that searches and locates computers that have a file that is desired. Essentially, P2P file sharing allows users to share files through an online software network. P2P file sharing is incredibly beneficial when it comes to multimedia elements such as movies or music. In the article "Content Producers Should Use P2P, Not Fear It," they argue that P2P file sharing is extremely helpful in drawing the attention and huge audience that is needed. Although P2P file sharing may cut revenues generated by the movie, by releasing it online through P2P file sharing, there is more widespread attention and people are more encouraged or motivated to donate money, which is another cash flow to the movie rather than revenues generated by selling the movie. In this method, P2P file sharing is helping both people who watch movies and the producers.

Privacy

As society starts to adapt to the rise of new media, there has been a surge in malicious cyberattacks such as malware, ransomware, phishing attacks, and breaches that have compromised and crippled corporations. One example of this is the massive security breach that Target suffered in 2014. This attack affected over 110 million customers. This goes to show how vulnerable companies become since new media expands a company's presence over the internet. With new technologies constantly being introduced, there are an increasingly number of methods to attack a company and they must stay alert. Target has done this by high security credit cards. "The credit cards come embedded with a tiny microprocessor chip, which is said to beef up security and make it more difficult for cybercriminals to access user data. Target had already begun work on the cards before the hack, but it is now accelerating this $100 million program." (Kerr) The rise of cyberattacks have forced companies and institutions to revamp their legacy cybersecurity infrastructure and invest more heavily into user data protection.

With this rise, more and more people are more conferenced with security and privacy. Some other breaches of data have affected even bigger companies such as the NSA. Security and privacy behavior differ by generation. "The responses diverge - particularly when it comes to protecting work email. Work email came in as the fifth highest concern for Gen-X , but it didn't even make the top 5 for Millenials" (Bradley) Social security has become the biggest priority for valuable personal information for both generations. As you can see, there is a generational gap between the concerns for privacy and it has become a huge concern throughout society.

Advice

If I was hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the college, I would use social media to create groups. Social media groups can help students connect with the right audience. For example, you can have separate Facebook groups to cater to smaller audiences within the Baruch community such as alumni groups, club groups, sports groups, groups for parents of students, and more. These groups can help students find a sense of community with other students who share the same interest. This allows students to conform to a college environment more easily as I personally know it takes some time to get used to the atmosphere of college. Groups can be a good place to hold discussions, share announcements and interact with community members.

Another method of using new media to improve Baruch is to develop open-source textbooks. "Open source texts - whether on paper or in a digital format - are compiled using copyright-free materials from a wide variety of sources and can be edited and updated immediately." (Agardy) Pursuing such a method of new media allows a community such as Baruch to come together and compile a custom-made text. This is a lot better in the long run because the other option would be to purchase traditional textbooks that may get outdated in a few years, which would force the school to purchase textbooks again. These traditional textbooks are expensive, but on the other hand, open source texts are free. Although this may take some time and money at first, in the long run, this would definitely be an intelligent choice.

Creativity and New Media

For this project, I used a graphic design tool website called Canva, which can be used for both web and print media design and graphics. Using this website, I was able to create a collage of company logos. I am a part of a club called Delta Sigma Pi on campus, and these people are currently working for the companies in this collage. By combining all these logos into one picture, it allows someone to get a holistic idea of what can be achieved by Baruch students.

HW Creativity

New media has become part of our lives whether we like it or not, and many people argue whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. As new media is constantly being interrupted with new trends and technologies, I believe new media is a great thing because it fosters creativity. While some people might blame new media to negatively affect creativity and reduce someone's ability to create new ideas, there are many advantages to using new media to foster creativity.

People find that new media could be a source of inspiration as they start to support different types of media such as images, animated GIFs, videos, and soundtracks. These new features allows for artists and designers to explore new ideas and inspirations for their own projects. Without new media, people would have to go to the library and search through books for this type of information. Specific design information, however, could be found within seconds with the use of new media. With the use of social media, you could try and find your own source of inspiration with sites such as Facebook and Pinterest.

Expanding on the previous point, improvements in information technologies has also had a great affect on creativity. With incredibly advance in information technology over the past couple of decades, it has been easier than ever before in distributing creative works via the internet. And while each person is able to view creative works more easily, it also presents more opportunities for people to respond to these creative works, and in turn, more opportunities for those people to attempt at something creative. "Not only did these advances make it easier to distribute the created work, but each one gave audiences the ability to respond to these works in their own ways, from written discussions to attempts to create their own art." (Bell 52) One example of this is Vimeo, a video social network that specializes in artistic and professional video footage. Designers, artists, and photographers are able to share their work and get feedback as well as appreciation.
